Shelter - Refugio Vivac de la Carigüela

ACCESS:
By vehicle: From Granada on the road of the Sierra to the University Hostel.
Without vehicle: Granada to the University Hostel using the buses of the company BONAL. 2 to 3 hours walk from the aforementioned hostel. With skis and using the ski lifts for about ten minutes. Access from the ski resort of Sierra Nevada follow the path to the refuge.

Like its twin, that of Laguna de la Caldera, it is in good condition, usually clean and well preserved. It has capacity for about 16 people quite comfortably, although they fit more if one "tightens". In case of need, and sleeping on the floor, or on the benches, there are enough more people.

The door closes well, although in winter, the years that there is plenty of snow, when the shelter is almost buried in the snow, it is necessary to enter it (downhill), as if it were an igloo.
Being located so high and in such an exposed place, the wind usually punishes it with force. In summer you can find water in the not very distant Laguna de Aguas Verdes, and in some chorrerillas that fall in the lane that goes down towards the Alpujarra.
From this refuge you can make ascents to the Veleta, Cerro de los Machos, Mulhacén, Tajos de la Virgen, Elorrieta, and all the rope to the Cerro del Caballo.

The refuge is located in one of the most vented hills of the whole mountain range. It is common in winter to be buried by snow.
Water: Melting of snow and jets of the Carigüela or in the Laguna de Aguas Verdes.
It consists of fireplace, table and benches.

Ascents: From this refuge you can make ascents to the Veleta, Cerro de los Machos, Mulhacén, Tajos de la Virgen, Elorrieta, and all the rope to the Cerro del Caballo.
Following the path you get to the free shelters of villavientos and the caldera.
