Shelter - Refugio del Caballo

Description

To access the shelter from the village of Laranjón (from Granada towards Motril by the A-44 where at exit 157 we arrive at Nigüelas or continue up to 164 to Laranjon) since the refuge can be accessed by both towns.
From Nigüelas follow the signs to Laguna del Caballo until you reach the refuge.
From Laranjon follow the river Laranjon where several kilometers past Tello and the free refuge Ventura, to the refuge is to our left, the peak of the Horse.
You can also access from the ski resort of Sierra Nevada through the refuge of Elorrieta.

El Refugio del Caballo is located at an altitude of 2,860m, ​​next to the Laguna del Caballo, at the base of the NE face of Cerro del Caballo. It is a refuge with only one room, with a door and a window that, because it is broken, is always closed.

It has capacity for about 8 people, although inside there are usually stones by the fireplace, which reduces a little space available. It is open all year, you just have to push the door, which is normally closed with a simple latch. It does not have any type of furniture, it is necessary to carry all the equipment to sleep and cook.

In winter, snow is usually introduced inside, so if the temperature rises 0 degrees, the ground becomes a large puddle.
Water can be found in the Laguna del Caballo, a few meters from the refuge, although as this lagoon does not drain normally, it is advisable to take water purification tablets.

The most interesting ascents that can be made from this refuge are Cerro del Caballo, Tajos Altos, and the Integral of 3,000m.
